Minecraft for Switch 2: Check Your Digital Upgrade Before October 27

Minecraft for Switch 2 launches October 27. Existing digital Switch owners should check their account and territory's upgrade offer before buying again.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is due to launch on October 27, 2026. If you already own Minecraft digitally on the original Nintendo Switch, check the offer shown in Nintendo eShop on your own account before buying another copy. Mojang has announced a limited digital upgrade path, but the terms differ by edition and, in two territories, by price.

Start with the version you already own

The announced Standard Edition offer is for people who already own a digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Mojang says eligible owners can get the digital Standard Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 free in most territories until the end of January 2027. Japan and Taiwan are exceptions, where Mojang says a charge applies.

The announcement does not establish that every account or regional storefront will present the offer in the same way. Sign in with the Nintendo Account connected to your existing digital purchase, open Nintendo eShop for your territory, and check the offer actually shown there. If the store does not confirm your eligibility, do not assume that buying the full game is the only option; consult the official Mojang announcement or Nintendo support for your region first.

Before paying, confirm these three points:

  1. The eShop recognises your existing digital Minecraft purchase.
  2. You are using the Nintendo Account and territory associated with that purchase.
  3. The eShop page identifies the Switch 2 Standard Edition offer available to your account.

This is an eligibility check, not a universal redemption procedure. The official announcement directs the offer through Nintendo eShop but does not document one identical sequence of checkout screens for every territory.

Standard is not the same as the paid collections

The limited offer applies to the digital Standard Edition. Mojang separately says existing digital owners can upgrade to the Deluxe Collection or Ultimate Collection for discounted fees. Those collections add optional content and are not part of the free Standard Edition offer.

In practical terms, first decide whether you only want the native Switch 2 edition. If so, look for the Standard Edition offer before comparing either collection. Only consider a paid collection if its additional content matters to you and the eShop clearly shows the account-specific upgrade price.

Two restrictions are easy to miss

All announced Switch 2 versions include the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack with Vibrant Visuals, but that visual mode is not available everywhere. Mojang excludes split-screen play and certain Marketplace worlds and content from Vibrant Visuals. Do not treat the feature as a promise that every world or multiplayer setup will use the new visuals.

There is also a platform restriction on Minecoins. Mojang says Minecoins included with the collections, and Minecoins bought in Minecraft on a Nintendo device, must be used within the Nintendo ecosystem. That matters if Minecoins are part of your reason for considering a paid collection.

Nintendo’s US product page confirms the October 27 release date for Minecraft on Switch 2. It is a regional storefront, however, so use it to confirm the product and date rather than as evidence of the offer available in another country. Your own eShop listing remains the decisive place to check eligibility, local price and edition before you pay.

The safest decision is simple: existing digital owners should check the Standard Edition offer on their own account first, then compare the optional collections only if they want the extras. If the eShop does not clearly recognise the purchase, resolve that uncertainty through the official terms or regional Nintendo support rather than paying for a second copy on assumption.
